New Opera Abroad? No(r) Way!

Some of my music has been performed overseas over the years, but this summer, I’ll finally be present to hear it! Today, Royce Vavrek and I had our first planning meeting for our stint at the Voksenåsen Summer Academy in Oslo, where we’ll be on the faculty, introducing students to some of our existing work and trying out new material for a short opera in progress. We’re adapting “The Three Army-Surgeons,” a lesser-known Brothers Grimm tale. This piece will have everything: Trickery! Romance! Medically unnecessary amputation! Possibly also a chain-smoking cat who talks like Fran Lebowitz!

Beyond this, it’s turning out to be even more of a Very Royce 2023 than I anticipated. No complaints over here. We’ll have more news to share before long! Meanwhile, applications are still open through April 16th. Join us to be a part of whatever it’s about to become!
